Lenoir County Public Schools and Self-Help Credit Union are asking Lenoir County to Adopt-A-Backpack and join in their drive to raise funds that go toward school supplies for local students.

Money donated to either the school system or the credit union will help ensure LCPS students get off to a good start with paper, pencils and other basic school supplies needed for the 2016-2017 school year.

For each $5 donation, contributors can Adopt-A-Backpack. School supplies purchased with donations will be distributed to students through the schools.

Adopt-A-Backpack is receiving financial and logistical support from Lenoir-Greene United Way and the Lenoir County Education Foundation, an arm of the Kinston-Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce.backpack no_no_logo 4 site

“Without the public’s help, hundreds upon hundreds of school children in our county will start school without the basic items they need for class,” said Patrick Holmes, LCPS public information officer and coordinator of Adopt-A-Backpack for the school district. “The need for school supplies continues throughout the school year, but it is especially acute when school begins and students need to be ready to learn.”

Last year, LCPS and Selp-Help Credit Union provided about 600 backpacks loaded with school supplies to all county public schools.

A typical backpack for an elementary student contains pencils, a ballpoint pen, erasers, ruler, pencil box or pouch, spiral notebook, notebook paper, colored pencils, markers, crayons and pocket folders. Older students get many of the same items, along with composition notebooks and binders.
