A small group of friends and coworkers brought Christmas to a large group of children Friday when they distributed gift bags to about 200 kindergartners in Kinston’s elementary schools.
The gifts came with a lesson, as organizer Dontario Hardy of Kinston emphasized to young students at Northeast, Northwest and Southeast elementary schools that Christmas should be a time of “thinking of others instead of ourselves.”
Each gift bag contained a gender-specific gift, candy and fun items like bubble-blowing solution. The items were purchased and packaged by Hardy and his fellow Santas – wife Angela Hardy, Maria Washington and Deonko Brewer.
“We decided this was what we wanted to do,” said Dontario Hardy, whose daughter attends Northeast. “I had heard some kids may be lacking, so we wanted to do something to let them know they weren’t forgotten or left out.”
This was the first Christmas the group has taken on the project but hopes to continue and expand it, said Hardy, who works with Washington at the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office.
