JOB SHADOWING 2012-2013

E-mail Print PDF

cte1312The Lenoir County business community opened their doors to the students of North and South Lenoir High Schools by participating in the Lenoir County Schools Career and Technical Education (CTE) Job Shadowing program. Now in its sixth year, this is one event students look forward to each year. Many seniors are doing it for their third time. The event helps students learn about possible career paths and the day-to-day work life in those fields.

North Lenoir High Job Shadowing Day started our year on October 11, 2012. Students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades completed applications and were selected based on teacher recommendation, no discipline or attendance problems, grade point average, and career selections. We had 150 students who visited 56 businesses in Kinston and LaGrange. Students are bused to the businesses for a “day on the job”, enjoy lunch courtesy of the businesses, and return to school to complete thank you letters and evaluations. The Free Press does a great job of hosting students allowing them to write and photograph our students while job shadowing---all in a day of the life of a reporter/photographer. The student-generated coverage appears the following day in the newspaper.

cte13_2South Lenoir High School held their Job Shadowing Day on December 6, 2012. With the same screening process, 167 students attended in 66 businesses including the Pink Hill and Deep Run community.

For a complete listing of businesses and students participating see the attached list and enjoy the slide shows of each school.  Kinston High School will round out the year with their Job Shadowing Day on April 25, 2013. Students should look for applications come in the spring. Businesses interested in participating are asked to contact Jessica Shimer, Lenoir County Career Development Coordinator, to receive more details and to be a part of growing our future workforce. She can be reached at 252-527-9184 ext. 1399 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

LCPS Celebrates Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month 2012-13

E-mail Print PDF

cte1213Students and faculty in the eight career and technical education (CTE) programs in our public middle and high schools will join others across the nation during the month of February to celebrate national CTE Month.  This year’s theme is “Career and Technical Education Works.”

The month provides CTE programs across the country an opportunity to demonstrate how CTE educates students to be college-and career-ready and prepares them for high-skill, high-demand, and high-wage career fields. It is a nationwide awareness event recognizing the positive impacts and opportunities for career exploration and career development that CTE provides students. CTE encompasses 94 percent of high school students and 13 million postsecondary students in the United States and includes high schools, career centers, community and technical colleges, four-year universities and more. In Lenoir County Public Schools, we have students enrolled in Agriculture, Business and Information Technology, Marketing, Health Science, Family and Consumer Sciences, Technology, Trade and Industrial, and Middle School CTE.

cte_videoEducation and training in CTE is a major part of the solution to myriad national economic and workforce problems, such as high school dropout rates, a weakened economy, global competitiveness and massive layoffs. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly one-third of the fastest growing occupations will require an associate’s degree or a postsecondary vocational certificate. At a time when job opportunity is so critical, CTE programs in every community are ensuring students are adequately equipped with the skills to successfully enter the workforce. In CTE students acquire technical skills that start them on the path to a productive future and receive application in context to reinforce lessons from their academic classes. Students are earning postsecondary credits each year, as well as, credentialing to jump start their future education. Students enjoy work-based learning opportunities such as Cooperative Education, internships, and job shadowing. They develop leadership and competency-based competitive skills in CTE Student Organizations such as DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, HOSA, and SkillsUSA, which are an integral part of their instruction. The activities planned over the next month will highlight the many ways that CTE Works!  We celebrate the CTE educators, CTE students, and business and community groups that are engaged with our local CTE programs.

Planned activities for the month include:

  • Proclamation presentation at Lenoir County Board of Commissioners meeting
  • Visit our visual display boards at Vernon Park Mall during the entire month of February highlighting students in classrooms, labs, student organizations, job shadowing, and career showcase opportunities
  • CTSOs like FBLA and FFA will host school staff breakfasts and faculty meetings
  • Series of featured articles in the Free Press of our important community partnerships including advisory boards, business partners, and work-based learning
  • Feb. 5th, Business, Finance, and IT Education Departments will host county-wide Advisory Board meeting at KHS
  • WorkKeys, an ACT job skills assessment system, is being offered statewide to CTE student concentrators. Successful students will received the Career Readiness Certification (CRC), another credentialing tool to equip our students as they continue their education or go directly to work. WorkKeys assessment dates are: NLHS: Feb. 19-20, SLHS: Feb. 5-7, 12-14, and KHS: Feb 19
  • Job Shadowing 2012-2013-a yearlong work-based opportunity continues at Kinston High on April 25. NLHS had 150 students shadowing at 51 community businesses in November. In December, SLHS had 167 students at 66 businesses.
  • Students@Work Week is Feb. 25- March 1. We have expanded this job shadowing for middle schoolers with the efforts of our GEAR UP team. SECU and West Pharmaceutical will participate again along with many new business partners.

Lenoir County Public Schools Introduces New Logo

E-mail Print PDF
logo_smallLenoir County Public Schools is pleased to announce the release of its new logo. The logo celebrates the relationship between the four education stakeholders - students, parents, educators, and the community - and symbolizes the school system's focus on culminating those relationships to connect our children to a prosperous future.

The new logo consists of a device and a wordmark. The device is an abstract rendering of the four education stakeholders arm in arm, each displayed in a primary color. The use of primary colors represents our commitment to building a solid educational foundation for our students. The wordmark consists of the letters lcps displayed in lowercase. The use of lowercase lettering is a modern, forward-thinking concept that is less imposing, more approachable, and more personal than the all-caps style.

“I feel that the new logo symbolizes the direction we plan to take as we better connect our schools to the community and the real world of work,” said Dr. Steve Mazingo, Superintendent of Lenoir County Public Schools. “The schools truly belong to the community and we feel it is our duty to help each child develop a plan and devise a path that will make their dreams come true.”
